Au Pair U.S. Tax's FAQ

Here are some frequently asked questions about Taxes.

This is general information and may not apply to every situation.

Do I Have to Pay?

Yes! You must pay Federal Income Tax on money earned as an Au Pair. This includes any bonus.

 

Depending on your location you may also be responsible for State and Local (City) tax.

What dates do I use?

The Tax year follows the calendar year, and is reported the following April. 

 

Taxes on money earned in 2023 is submitted before April 15th 2024

 

 

How Much Will I Owe?

If you earned less than $11,000 in 2023 then you owe 10% of your pay.

 

Depending on your location you may also be responsible for State and Local (City) tax.

 

What if I earned more than $11,000?

If you earned $11,000 or more in 2023 then your first $10,999 is taxed at 10% then over that amount that additional earnings is taxed at a higher rate and would need to be calculated.

How do I Pay?

In most instances Au Pairs will fill out the

1040-NR. It can be downloaded for free Here

 

You will fill it out, and mail it along with payment to IRS.

 

This is only your Federal Taxes.

What if I don't pay?

There was a famous American Gangster named Al Capone. They struggled to find a way to arrest him until they found him guilty of Tax Evasion!

 

We are not suggesting you will be arrested for not paying your taxes, but it could affect future visits and visas if you wanted to return to the United States.

What is the IRS?

  • The Internal Revenue Service is responsible for collecting U.S. federal taxes.

 

What If I get Married before April?

  • This does not change any tax liability. Your tax status is as of Dec 31 2023

 

What is a "Standard Deduction"

  • This is a deductions Americans are able to take on their taxes. Au Pairs are not eligible for this.

 

What about my program fees?

  • These are not tax-deductible

 

Do I need to share my Social Security Number with my host family?

  • Yes, Your host family is required to fill out an I-9 Form which would include them to have your SSN

 

Can I deduct my Education expenses?

  • No, Au Pairs are not able to deduct Education Expenses.

 

Does my host family claim me as a depended?

  • No, you are not a dependent. Depending on their circumstances they may be able to deduct childcare costs.

 

What is a SCHEDULE OI?

  • It gives the IRS more information about your home country and visa, this is included in our services.

 

HELP, it's after April 15th! What should I do?

  • You should file as soon as you can. There will be a slightly higher payment.

 

What if I can't pay?

  • You should still timely file your return and pay as much of the amount owed as possible.

    This will prevent the penalty for failure to file a return on time, which is assessed at a higher rate.

  • The IRS also offers payment plans.

 

My friend didn't pay and nothing happened to them.

  • Not paying your taxes is a crime. It is possible to commit a crime and not get caught.
  • The IRS is notified of your entry into the United States

 

Can I pay my taxes with a foreign bank account?

  • No, you must pay from a US bank account.

 

Where can I pay my taxes due?

  • We encourage you to provide banking info with your return.
  • Payment plans are also avaliable at the IRS website - www.irs.gov/payments

 

I have a question about your pricing? You say starting at $49? Could it be more?

  • Most returns will be $49.
  • If your return has special circumstances we will update you on price before we begin.
